White turns down Warwicks job

Warwickshire have been forced to start their search for a new bowling coach all over again after former England all-rounder Craig White opted to stay with Yorkshire as second team coach.

Ashley Giles, Warwickshire's director of cricket, had identified White, a former England team-mate, as the man he wanted to replace former South Africa fast bowler Allan Donald as his right-hand man.

White was offered a contract after he visited Edgbaston two weeks ago but has now contacted Giles to inform him that he has decided to stay with Yorkshire. White's decision will come as a blow to Giles who lost Donald, his trusted lieutenant, in September when he decided to return to South Africa for family reasons.

Donald gave up his job as England's fast bowling consultant to return to Warwickshire when Giles was appointed as successor to Mark Greatbatch in September 2007 but his family failed to settle back in Birmingham.

Giles was keen to make a like-for-like replacement for Donald and saw White as the ideal candidate as he bowled both spin and seam during a career that included 30 Tests.

White has also made a favourable impression in his two years in charge of Yorkshire's second team.

Giles hoped to sort out the bowling coach vacancy before he departs to South Africa in his role as one of England's part-time national selectors, but White's decision means that there will be a further delay in making a key appointment.

Former Scotland and England one-day international all-rounder Dougie Brown is likely to be in charge of day-to-day playing affairs at Edgbaston while Giles is away, in his role as second team coach and academy director.

But Brown is not believed to be a contender to replace Donald as bowling coach.
