Saxelby fights back from freak shoulder injury
Ian Saxelby is determined to play in Gloucestershire’s first game of the new season, despite an unfortunate injury setback while away with the England Performance Programme squad.
The young pace bowler had to return home a week early from last month’s England trip to South Africa after dislocating a shoulder getting out of a swimming pool.
“It was the end of a day in South Africa and we were all doing some races in the pool when the accident happened,” explained Saxelby.
“I came through to win my race, but as I went to climb out of the pool I placed my weight through my forearms and hands and put my shoulder out.
“I saw a surgeon when I got back and had a scan. It already feels as though the shoulder is healing nicely so I’m hopeful of bowling again in a few weeks time.
“If nothing has to be done, I should be able to take a full part in the build-up to the new season and I very much hope to be involved in the first game.”
Saxelby was enjoying his time in South Africa, having recovered from knee surgery at the end of last season.
“I like going abroad during the winter and have now done so three years in succession,” he said. “I had just got back into a bit of rhythm with my bowling and my knee was feeling fine.
“I also faced some South African bowlers in the nets to work on my batting. I got what I wanted to get out of the trip - apart from having to come home a week early!”
