Powell grabs Scotland job opportunity
Former Warwickshire captain Michael Powell has joined Scotland’s coaching set-up as part-time batting coach in their High Performance department.
Powell, who was captain when Warwickshire won the last Benson & Hedges Cup in 2002, has spent the last year teaching and coaching at Loretto School near Edinburgh where he has previously worked during the winter months.
The former England Under-19 and England A batsman retired from first-class cricket at the end of the 2008 season after Warwickshire informed him that he would not be offered a new contract.
The popular Powell is making a success of his new career north of the border and will continue to combine his commitments at Loretto with his new coaching duties in which he will work with a group of current and emerging international players.
“I’m loving it here in Scotland,” Powell said. “This is a great opportunity for me to work with Scotland’s best batters and develop my coaching career.”
Meanwhile, Warwickshire’s Scotland international seamer Calum MacLeod is continuing to undergo remedial work on his bowling action at Edgbaston.
MacLeod was withdrawn from competitive cricket midway through last season after doubts were cast about his action while he was away on international duty with Scotland.
Having worked initially with former South Africa fast bowler Allan Donald, MacLeod is now under the tutelage of Graeme Welch, Donald’s successor as Warwickshire bowling coach, who is attempting to rebuild the youngster’s action and confidence after a torrid eight months.
